Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s independence day. Mexico’s Independence day (which is Mexico’s most important national holiday) is September 16th. Cinco de Mayo (which is Spanish for the 5th of May) is the day the Mexican Army defeated the French forces at the Battle of Puebla, May 5th, 1862. This was significant because the Mexican Army was horribly outnumbered (by about 2:1), they were also not as well equipped as the French Army.
However, Mexico stood strong and came out victorious! Vamos a celebrar (let’s celebrate)!
Do you and your family celebrate Cinco de Mayo? How do you all celebrate? What holidays do you like to celebrate? Let me know in the comments 🙂
