We almost guarantee you know Alex Freeman! The 11-year-old pop singer/ songwriter, fashion designer and entrepreneur. May be you’ve heard of her inspirational song “Be Nice” or her work to fight against bullying? No?! Then you definitely know about her all natural, cruelty-free line of cosmetics and her plans to start her own line of clothes?!

It’ clear this is someone who needs to be on your radar and we had the chance to chat with her about all things musical theater, her allergy to flip-flops and her soon-to-be released music. Check out the full interview below!

1. What motivates you to work hard?

What motivates me to work hard? It’s always having a goal.

I love setting goals, working hard and just being able to achieve my goals because that’s what I really love to do and it makes me happy and excited when I do achieve my goals. I like to work hard each and every day and having motivation from just doing what I love.

2. What song are you most likely to sing at Karaoke Night?

“Beautiful” by Christina Aguilera

I have always sang that song at Karaoke. I never work it, like I’m not normally on pitch but it’s so fun and I love that song. I don’t do karaoke a ton but I do when we’re in Mexico because they have a live karaoke band and we do it every time. I always pick “Beautiful” because it’s one of the only songs I know on the Karaoke list.

3. What is the best book/ series you’ve ever read?

Goddess Girls by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams.

It’s about Greek mythology but all the Greek goddesses put into middle school. It’s really interesting! You have to read it for yourself to know about it. It’s a great book series!

4. Who would you want to be stranded with on a deserted island?

There’s three people! Either Christina Aguilera, Ariana Grande or my mom!

Christine Aguilera has the best vocals ever and I would be like, “I want to know how you do it!”

Teach me and if there’s nobody else there then there’s no interruptions it’s just me and her and then Ariana Grande because she’s like number one in music and she’s amazing and her vocals are amazing and my mom because I love her so much and she takes care of me and I can’t live without her.

5. What is the best gift you’ve ever been given?

Christmas 2017! It’s the last the gift and they’re covered in garbage bags (there are three!) I don’t know what they are! My dad says they’re not for me (they really were but I didn’t know it!) I open one up and it says Paris all over it.

And I’m like what? And I see this itinerary that says Globus Tours and I look through it and it says all these different places in Europe and I’m like OH! MY! GOD! I’m going to Europe! It was amazing and I could not believe it. It was my best present, it was my best trip – I loved it!

I went to France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Holland, Amsterdam and Austria. It was a lot but it was amazing!

6. How did you first get into music?

I originally started with Musical theater with shows and plays because that was really all that was available in my area. So, I would always know everyone’s lines and everyone’s songs and I could sing every part and I loved it!

Then my parents signed me up for this camp called “Rock Camp” where I learned to write my own songs. I was the lead singer of a band (and I was only 5) and I remember the guy who was charge said, “Hey you really know how to work a mic you need to teach the older kids and the older people” and I was like, “awesome! I’m five!” and so I loved doing that and it was really exciting.

That’s where I wrote my first song “Be Nice” and that’s where I learned to write songs. You had to write a song in one week and you had to do it and have a big performance and it was awesome! I really, really loved it and it was super fun!

7. What is one thing you want your fans to know about you?

Number one – I love traveling! That’s something I love to do!

And I love doing makeup. That’s one thing I really love. Like if I could get a PR package every single day that would be one of the happiest days of my life every single day because I love makeup and if I wasn’t totally into makeup and fashion designing and all these different things that I do, I would just be a make-up artist.

8. What do you think is the best song you’ve released and why?

I love “Be Nice” because it’s a song that’s helped so many people! I get so many Instagram DM’s from people that say, “your song played and people heard it at my school and stopped bullying me! It changed my life!”

“Be Nice” is a song that I wrote when I was five because I was being bullied. The reason I was being bullied was because I would wear sparkly dresses every day. It was something I loved to do and I would wear lipstick and mascara. This is before highlighter was really popular so I wouldn’t wear highlighter but I would wear blush and it would be everywhere and I just loved it!

It was something I loved to do and I loved to wear makeup and be dressed fancy. Everyone would make fun of me for it so I wrote that song to be like, “hey! You can’t make fun of me if I want to look pretty. It’s okay if I look pretty.”

That was the meaning for me – like be nice! Seriously!

Then I realized it helped so many different people. Just that song! I would go into schools and people would be like, “Your song changed my life. People don’t bully me anymore and it was amazing to me,” and I was like, “wait I did that?”

So I think that’s my favorite because it helped so many people.

Other than that, I really like “Beautiful Self” which I co-wrote when I was 9. It’s a song that has a lot of meaning behind it. It’s kind of like an anthem that shows, “hey, you’re perfect and your beautiful inside and out!”

And my other favorite, which hasn’t been released yet is called, “Don’t Stop”. We’re going to be releasing that one really, really soon and it’s going to be really, really fun and I hope you guys will love it! And make sure you go watch it when it is released! (Watch on my Instagram for it! I’ll tell you guys when it does!)

9. How would you describe your music style?

I would describe it as pop, R&B and Soul. My music is really pop but my musical style when I’m not doing original music is like Soul, R&B, Pop. I love all of it!

10. We heard that on top of being a musician you’re also an entrepreneur! Can you tell us a little bit more about your cosmetics line and how you got involved in the industry?

I was probably about 8 years old and I was reading a paper with my mom that was talking about all the chemicals in kid’s makeup. Did you know 50% of kid’s makeup has heavy metals in it?! So, I wanted to learn about it and I realized, hey! I’m putting on makeup that’s kid’s makeup and it’s not good for me and my sisters are wearing kid’s makeup. They’re playing with it, and stuff goes in their mouths and they put it in their eyes and they rub it in their nose and it’s not safe!

I wanted to make something that was completely safe for everyone so I have my three different colors of lip butter and they are all natural, cruelty free, have some of the best ingredients I could find for my company and it’s kind of fun to say, “hey I’m an entrepreneur!”

I don’t really think of it as a big thing but I’ve talked to a lot of people who are like, “Oh my gosh! You have your own business!” and I’m like, “yeah!”

It makes me happy like, “I did that!” Try it for yourself – make something at home and think, “hey do you think someone will buy this?”

11. We also heard you’re planning on a clothing line too!! If you were able to design a clothing line today what would it look like?

So, I love high end fashion. I love Channel and Louis Vuitton – everything! I love high end fashion. I don’t want to wear sweat pants, or jeans and a t-shirt. It’s not my thing. I mean I wear leggings and athletic wear a ton, but I love seeing people dressed up and looking good.

I think my absolute favorite quote – well I have two – and they’re both my Karl Lagerfeld – are:

“I’m physically allergic to flip-flops” because I am physically allergic to flip-flops – they do not stay on my feet and I can’t walk with them.

Number two is – well the reason I love this one is because it goes against everything that is happening in fashion or in everyday life. It’s, “Sweatpants are a sign of defeat. You lost control of your life, so you bought some sweatpants.”

I found it on Pinterest and it’s been my favorite ever since!

My clothing line would be taken from high end fashion but something that’s comfortable and looks like you’re totally dressed up. So, a pair of jeans with cuts on them, but the cuts and the threads are pink and there are sparkles on it and there’s patches and all kinds of stuff, and they have the crocheted, woven Channel pattern.

That’s what my clothing line would look like!

12. Musician, entrepreneur, fashion designer!? How do you manage to keep up with everything!?

I find that what helps the most is focus. I have so many things that I do in my everyday life. I have vocal lessons, sometimes I have vocal lessons every day of the week. Other times I don’t have vocal lessons for two weeks and I go to my normal classes.

I just got back enrolled in school. I was doing online virtual school, and last week I officially reenrolled in “human school”. It’s really fun, but still hard to maintain everything. The last couple of days I had to pulled out of school for vocal lessons because I’m getting ready for a callback and I’m in LA.

It is really hard to maintain everything but I work really hard on it and it takes a lot of focus. For example, when I was doing virtual school I was traveling like crazy and I just didn’t have time. Then I found out I was six weeks behind in school work – that’s a lot!

So, my dad said, “if you don’t get these six weeks of school work done, you are going to be in massive trouble” so I got it done in one week. I had until 10 pm on Sunday – so worked Sunday to Sunday – and if I didn’t have it done by 10 pm I would be in really big trouble.

I got it done! I was laser focused on my school work and it was awesome and I didn’t get in trouble.

13. What do you like most about the Girl2Girl App?

What I like most about the Girl2Girl App is being able to talk about so many different things and helping other people. It’s a bully free app and it’s a place where you can make friends online and it’s a place where there’s support for other girls!
