Did you know that play can increase your child's attention levels?
Recent research suggests that a 20-minute recess/play period increased the levels of student attention to academic tasks in which they were immediately engaged afterwards. In the research, shorter recess periods (10 minutes) appeared too brief for children to benefit and the lack of increasingly positive impact for lengthy recess periods (30 minutes) may have been due to student fatigue that decreased their attention to tasks afterwards. Be sure that your school's policies allow all children to benefit from appropriate recess time and that they don't take away use the loss of this time to "punish" misbehaviors (especially since the students who are more likely to get into trouble may need it more than their classmates.) You may also experiment with a period of play after school to see if it helps your child to recharge and refocus for homework time.
