Did You Know?
Did you know that what you buy for your daughter tells her what you value?

There are so many choices about where to put your money when you're shopping for your kids. There is so much pressure on parents to buy the clothes or toys that your daughter's friends have and that she will therefore beg you to buy for her. This is where you need to remind yourself of your values and remember that you have choices. Parents often worry about how their girls follow the trends of actresses, T.V. characters, and even dolls, who are scantily-dressed "party girls" with a bad attitude – well, parents should worry. These are unhealthy role models and girls should who get caught up in them often lose a sense of themselves. Here's what parents can do: don't buy clothes or products that perpetuate these negative ideas of how girls should be, and then explain your buying choices to your daughter. Resist the pressure to do what other parents might be doing, resist the pressure to give in to the pressure on parents today to be "cool. " Your daughter will likely resist your decisions and consider you inflexible but over time she will clearly understand where your values lie – and you can remind yourself that, when it comes to helping your daughter develop a healthy sense of herself and helping her to value herself as a girl and later as a woman, you are inflexible and that's a good thing!
